Goldschmidt 2017 : Session 8c: "Fate of Engineered Nanomaterials along their Life Cycle: The Importance of Safe by Design"

Convenors: Armand Masion (CNRS-CEREGE, Labex SERENADE), Camille de Garidel-Thoron (Labex SERENADE), Frank von der Kammer (Univ. Vienna)

Engineered nanomaterials, as all chemicals, may pose risks to workers, consumers and the environment. These risks are likely to evolve during the life cycle of the nano-enabled product, as transformations during the use- and end of life phases may modify the hazard linked to the nanomaterial as well as their exposure potential, which both can be minimized through intelligent product design. This session will be dedicated to examining the bio-physical-chemical mechanisms that control the exposure and the toxicity of nano-enabled products, with a special focus on the end-of-life of these products, as well as the safe by design aspects aiming at reducing their impact on the surrounding environment.

The keynote for this session will be given by Dr. Jean-Yves Bottero, initiator and 1st director of the Labex SERENADE, the French national Safe by Design of Nanomaterials  initiative.
