We would like to encourage you to consider submitting an abstract for the ICOBTE 2019 symposium we are organizing on "Biogeochemistry of trace elements in agricultural recycling". The symposium description follows.

Symposium 11. Biogeochemistry of trace elements in agricultural recycling

Organizers: Samuel Legros, Emmanuel Doeslch, Kirk Scheckel, Enzo Lombi, and Minggan Xu

Agricultural recycling is a way of making effective use of organic waste (OW) of differentorigins (agricultural, urban, etc.). OW application in crop fields has beneficial effects by (i) improving the soil physical properties; (ii) providing nutrients, thereby reducing the use of inorganic fertilizers and (iii) improving the soil-borne microflora and fauna activity by providing organic carbon. The advantages of using OW in cultivated soils, however, should be assessed together with the environmental and toxicological impacts due to the presence of potentially toxic elements. Many studies have highlighted that OW application in crop fields can drastically boost levels of trace contaminants in soil, regardless of the origin (urban, agricultural, etc.) and type of OW (raw, digestate or compost), as well as the soil and climate conditions. Because of the potential contamination of soil, crop and water resources, the fate of TEs associated with these organic residual by-products represents a key issue. This symposium will examine i) speciation issues of the TEs within the organic waste and ii) the fate of TEs over time in the organic waste-crop-soil-water system. This symposium will consider several scales of investigation and several approaches: from short-term laboratory experiment tailored to decipher mechanisms, to long-term crop field studies, or modeling approaches.
